    Abstract
The reliability of intrinsic thermocouples in temperature measurements in the water jet cooling process of hot steel plates is investigated using the finite-element method. It is found that the isothermal condition does not exist for the separate roots of thermocouple wires when the connection line of the two roots is parallel or inclined to the movement direction of the water. The maximum temperature difference between the thermocouple wire roots will be affected strongly by the progressing speed of water cooling zones and heat flux magnitude, and mildly by the heat flux profile, the depths of holes, and the specific heat values.
